This Ampex MM1000 16 track analog recorder for sale
is either the third of fourth ever built. The first was at mirasound. The second was for pacific recording studios in los angeles. This machine Came from T.T.G. studios. It was built in house from two ampex ag-440 * tracks and a VTR-1100 frame. As far as I have heard they did so by buying all neccessary parts from ampex and built it themselves as the machine was not commercially available yet. It was in operation from at least february 1968 and probably sooner. They where eventually sent the "preliminary manual" dated august 1968.
This amchine was used to record the doors album "Waitiing for the Sun" , Frank Zappa's "Hot Rats" http://www.squidoo.com/hot-rats-the-jazzy-side-of-frank-zappa
And Jimi Hendrix record many songs on the machine
