Does anyone know about these machines or has any experience with them? Is there a 2 track version?

Hi, the J37 was build as the first multitrack maschine by STUDER in 1" 4 Track Format and made world-wide success since EMI (Abbey Road) used it for recording the Beatles (for example: st pepper's lonely hearts club band album) Note, this unit has never being released in 2 Track version. But beside the J37 Version there was also a Unit called H37 this was made in 1/2" 3 Track or 4 Track only. If you looking for 2 Track Tube Unit the STUDER C37 (1/4") is the right maschine it has the same playback and record amplifiers like the J37. J37's are great machines but were not designed and do not work well in 1" 2 track mode due to pronounced dynamic azimuth errors. A 1", 2 track tape made on a J37 or C37 will not reliably playback its OWN recording and will definetly not interchange to another 1' ,2 track recorder like our ATR102 1". It took me a year of deveopment to simply attain solid, repeatable playback and interchange of the format on the ATR102. Due to the formats wide tracks, huge dynamic azimuth errors cause drops in HF output and send the stereo center image all over the place. 1" 2 track sounds like real life but only if the depth of field remains rock solid. If that doesn't happen any improvement in the dynamic range of the format is of no value.

what would be the ideal 1" two track machine? I have a studer a827 and I'm thinking to buy a 1"two track head-stack with aria electronics...what do you think about this?

ATR Services builds the 1 inch two track machines with the Aria electronics. Pretty amazing overdub and mix machine.
